UNITED NATIONS’ SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

The institution of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in all work of United Nations (UN) is a universal call to action for progressing together by all countries, developmental partners and agencies towards the common goals. This multidimensional and multisectoral progress agenda is central to the human development, to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

Introduction and Rationale :
The SDGs are agreed by 193 countries in the UN General Assembly on 5 September 2015 by adopting the 2030 Development Agenda titled “Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. Since January 2016, these SDGs are guiding the UN, associated agencies, International partners and countries in policy formulation, funding and implementing the multisectoral developmental work to continue by the year 2030. This agenda has outlined 17 Sustainable Development Goals and the associated 169 targets. Each target has 1-3 indicators used to measure progress toward reaching the targets. In total, there are 304 indicators that will measure compliance.

These SDGs are built on the successes of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), while including new areas such as climate change, economic inequality, innovation, sustainable consumption, peace and justice, among other priorities. Unlike the MDGs, the SDGs framework does not distinguish between “developed” and “developing” nations. Instead, the goals apply to all countries.

The SDGs work in the spirit of partnership and rational to improve life of the future generations in a sustainable manner, they provide clear guidelines and targets for each countries to adopt in accordance with their national priorities and the environmental challenges of the world at large. In conclusion, the SDGs are an inclusive agenda and tackle the root causes of poverty and unite the world to make a positive change for both people and planet. (Source: UNDP and others) In follow-up to this global consensus, all countries form their national developmental agenda around the SDGs’ targets specified for each. Therefore, it is imperative for all public and private functionaries and stakeholders to be well acquainted with the SDGs.
